Notary Public: Low-tech fraud prevention and more

In our high tech world, identity theft has sadly become a relatively common and even expected occurrance.  Savvy computer users often have a number of security measures and personal steps they employ to protect their electronic information.  While millions of people enjoy the convenience of digital or mobile options for many day to day transactions, every now and then it is required to scale back to rudimentary pen and paper to "seal the deal" for many employment, financial and legal transactions.

When going "low-tech" to provide a signature on paper, you still cannot afford to take any chances with fraud.  Particularly in these situations, a notary public can become your first line of defense to protect against fraud for important paper processes.  Let's explain what a notary is and does.

A Colorado notary public is an officer commissioned to serve as an impartial official witness and perform notarial acts in all counties.  Notaries here have the power to take acknowledgments, affidavits, depositions, sworn testimony/statements, administer oaths and affirmations as well as certify copies.

Wondering just what to expect when you work with a notary public?  Well for the most commonly requested notarial services, generally each appointment includes the following basic steps:

  1. Notary verifies and records the identity of the signer(s) with photo ID in their notary journal
  2. Notary witnesses the signatures or verifies original and copied documents in their presence
  3. Notary completes notarial certificate and applies their signature and stamp
  4. Notary collects signature of signers in notary journal
